Definition

U-WIN is a comprehensive, citizen-centric digital platform designed to digitize the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) of India. Modeled after the Co-WIN platform, it serves as a name-based electronic registry to track the immunization status of every pregnant woman and child (0–16 years) in real-time.

Objectives

  • Digital Tracking: To establish a digital tracking mechanism for every pregnant woman and child to ensure no one is left behind.
  • Elimination of Zero-Dose Children: To identify and reach “zero-dose” children (those who haven’t received the first DPT dose) and “missed” children.
  • Anywhere Access: To facilitate “Anywhere Access, Anytime Vaccination,” particularly benefiting migrant populations.
  • Real-time Monitoring: To provide program managers with real-time data on immunization coverage and vaccine utilization.

Key Features

  • Registration & Identification:
    • Self-registration via web portal or mobile app.
    • On-site (walk-in) registration at vaccination centers.
    • Integration with Aadhaar for beneficiary identification.
  • ABHA Integration: Automated generation of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs for newborns and pregnant women.
  • Scheduling: Online appointment booking for specific sessions and centers.
  • Digital Certificates: Generation of uniform, QR-based, digitally verifiable e-vaccination certificates immediately after administration.
  • Automated Alerts: SMS notifications for registration confirmation and reminders for upcoming/due doses.
  • Offline Mode: Enables vaccinators to record data in areas with poor internet connectivity, which auto-syncs once online.

Implementation Structure

  • Target Population: 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants annually.
  • Vaccines Covered: Covers all 12 Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPDs) under UIP (e.g., BCG, OPV, Pentavalent, Rotavirus, MR, PCV, DPT, Td).
  • User Modules:
    1. Citizen Module: For self-registration and certificate downloads.
    2. Vaccinator Module: For recording administrative data and delivery outcomes.
    3. Administrator Module: For session planning and coverage analysis.

Benefits in Pediatric Practice

  • Precision in Scheduling: Adherence to minimum dose intervals is hard-coded into the system.
  • Data Reliability: Replaces manual, error-prone registers (ASHA/ANM diaries) with a single source of truth.
  • Interoperability: Records can be accessed across state borders, ensuring continuity of care for children of migrant workers.
  • Outcome Tracking: Records delivery outcomes (live birth/stillbirth) and birth weight, linking maternal health to neonatal records.

Current Status (2026)

  • Nationwide rollout completed (excluding certain pilot-exempt regions).
  • Integrated as the primary digital backbone for the National Health Mission’s immunization pillar.
